Watercolor

Watercolor painting is a delicate yet expressive medium that requires a balance of control and spontaneity. This class introduces students to the fundamentals of watercolor, building upon their previous knowledge from oil painting while adapting to the unique properties of this medium.

Students will complete a series of watercolor paintings, covering a variety of subjects such as landscapes, seascapes, animals, and still life. Through these exercises, they will develop an understanding of how to manipulate water and pigment to create both soft, blended transitions and sharp, defined edges.

• Understanding different types of washes, such as flat, graduated, and wet-on-wet techniques.
• Controlling edges—learning how to paint crisp, sharp lines or allow for smooth, organic blending.
• Layering and glazing techniques for adding depth and complexity to watercolor compositions.
• Exploring the interaction of water and pigment to create beautiful, expressive effects.

This class helps students build confidence in handling watercolors while maintaining a balance between technique and artistic intuition.
